Trailer

COLCOA is pleased to present this digitally restored thriller, the final pairing of Alain Delon and Jean Gabin. Four years earlier the old-school sensei and the new wave upstart shared the screen in the hugely successful The Sicilian Clan, and audiences wanted more. Here, Delon plays a reformed safecracker determined to walk the straight and narrow even as the machinery of state and the cruelties of fate conspire against him. Gabin plays Germain, a world-weary social worker fighting to give Gino a fair shake and a second chance in life. Things look promising as Gino lands a job and rekindles an old romance, until the vindictive Inspector Goitreau returns – with nods to Les Miserables’ Inspector Javert – intent on inflaming Gino’s pent up rage. In an early role, a young Gérard Depardieu plays a swaggering tough guy from Gino’s criminal days.

First premiering at COLCOA in 1998, this swashbuckling classic co-written and directed by Philippe de Broca (THAT MAN FROM RIO – Also on COLCOA VIRTUAL CINEMA – ), is presented with an all-new digital restoration, and the swordplay never looked so good. Romance and revenge are the main ingredients in this sweeping adventure, set amid a lavish 17th century backdrop. Daniel Auteuil plays the stalwart Lagardère, a man of humble origins, but whose skill with a sword earns him the patronage of the flamboyant Duke of Nevers. The closest known heir to the Duke’s considerable fortune is his slithery cousin, Count Gonzague, so when the Duke resolves to marry the mother of his newly discovered child, the conniving Count schemes to block their union at all costs. Lagardère is tasked to protect the Duke’s infant daughter by hiding out with an itinerant theater troupe and raising the girl himself.  As his young charge, Aurore, grows into a radiant young woman, Lagardère adds a new theatrical twist to his formidable fencing abilities, hoping that one day he will have the chance to avenge his patron and restore Aurore as the rightful heir.

In the vein of such classic coming of age films as Francois Truffaut’s THE 400 BLOWS, Diane Kurys’s PEPPERMINT SODA captures a particular moment in the tumultuous life and development of young people. Anne (Eléonore Klarwein) and Frederique (Odile Michel) are sisters entering their teen years in 1963 France, torn between divorced parents and struggling with the confines of their strict school. Along the way, they undergo an awakening both political and romantic. Kurys’s celebrated film revels in the comedy and tragedy of the seemingly mundane, weaving a complex tapestry of everyday existence that also touches on the universal.

Solange is seriously depressed. She hardly eats, can’t sleep, gets migraines and sometimes even faints. So her dear, doting husband makes it his mission to find her a lover who will cheer her up. But even a new lover cannot lift the wan soul’s spirits… until the phlegmatic Solange takes matters into her own hands. Scandalous and triumphant, hilarious and shocking, high farce with a heavy dose of Mozart thrown in, GET OUT YOUR HANDKERCHIEFS  had audiences both cheering and hissing when it was first released in 1978. The picture had the New York Film Festival selection committee at one another’s throats — was it a brilliant erotic fantasy or downright misogynistic? Yet the film opened to euphoric reviews and became a smash box-office hit. Perhaps Bertrand Blier’s most haunting and masterful comedy, the film went on to rack up an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and a César Award for Best Original Music. The National Society of Film Critics named it Best Film of the year. 40 years later, the digitally restored version made its North American Premiere at the COLCOA French Film Festival before a new U.S. release by Cohen Media Group.

A blow dart-wielding thug snatches a rare statuette from the Musée de l’Homme; anthropologist Jean Servais (Rififi) is kidnapped in broad Parisian daylight; serviceman Jean-Paul Belmondo begins his 8-day leave by changing to civvies in a Métro entrance and witnesses fiancée Françoise Dorléac (Catherine Deneuve’s sister, killed in a car accident 3 years later) getting kidnapped herself – and then the chase begins: by motorcycle, shoe leather, flight to Rio de Janeiro sans ticket or passport, airport baggage carrier, cable car, pink car complete with green stars and a rumble seat, water skies, Amazon river boat, seaplane, jungle vine… all shot in breathtaking widescreen and color. Even as Dorléac, rescued, is kidnapped again, Belmondo performs his own blood-curdling stunts against that sugar loaf Rio skyline and across that under-construction unearthly architecture of Brasilia (even parachuting almost into the jaws of a hungry croc).

Forced to earn a living by accepting demeaning roles negotiated by her erratic husband, Nadine Chevalier (Romy Schneider) encounters tabloid photographer Servais Mont (Fabio Testi) on the set of her latest film, a cheap soft-core movie. Desperate to win her affections, Servais secretly uses money borrowed from a shady associate to bankroll her next project, a production of Richard III with Nadine starring opposite the maniacal German thespian Karl-Heinz Zimmer (Klaus Kinski).Nadine is torn apart between Servais, for whom she is falling in love, and her husband Jacques, to whom she has moral obligations.
Romy Schneider delivers a César Award-winning performance as a down-on-her-luck actress in L’IMPORTANT C’EST D’AIMER (THAT MOST IMPORTANT THING: LOVE), Andrzej Żuławski’s “passionate portrait of the dignity – and the indignities – of an actor’s work” (Film Comment).
