Trailer

Paris 1967. Jean-Luc Godard, the leading filmmaker of his generation, is shooting LA CHINOISE with the woman he loves, Anne Wiazemsky, 20 years his junior. They are happy, attractive, in love. They marry. But the film’s reception unleashes a profound self-examination in Jean-Luc. The events of May ’68 will amplify this process, and the crisis that shakes the filmmaker. Deep-rooted conflicts and misunderstandings will change him irrevocably. Revolutionary, off-the-wall, destructive, brilliant, he will pursue his choices and his beliefs to the breaking point… With his romantic and slyly funny GODARD MON AMOUR the Academy Award-winning director of THE ARTIST, Michel Hazanavicius, once again affectionately transports moviegoers back to a unique time and place in cinematic history: France, in the late 1960s. Actress Anne Wiazemsky (Stacy Martin) finds herself juggling political protests and artistic challenges in her married life with renowned filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard (Louis Garrel). As her country undergoes enormous cultural change, so too does Anne’s dynamic with her husband. GODARD MON AMOUR is a story of both real love and reel love.

Trailer

FAREWELL MY QUEEN marks the return of acclaimed director Benoît Jacquot (A SINGLE GIRL, SEVENTH HEAVEN , IN THE WOODS) and brilliantly captures the passions, debauchery, occasional glimpses of nobility and ultimately the chaos that engulfed the court of Marie Antoinette in the final days before the full-scale outbreak of the Revolution. Based on the best-selling novel by Chantal Thomas, the film stars Léa Seydoux as one of Marie’s ladies-in-waiting, seemingly innocent but quietly working her way into her mistress’s special favors, until history tosses her fate onto a decidedly different path. With the action moving effortlessly from the gilded drawing rooms of the nobles to the back quarters of those who serve them, this is a period film at once accurate and sumptuous in its visual details and modern in its emotions. Diane Kruger gives her best performance to date as the ill-fated Queen and Virginie Ledoyen is the Queen’s special friend Gabrielle de Polignac.

Trailer

Chiara Mastrioanni won the Best Actress Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for her delicious star turn in Christophe Honoré’s quirky, song-laden, fantasy-drenched romantic farce, ON A MAGICAL NIGHT (Think A Midsummer Night’s Dream meets Scenes From a Marriage.) Mastrioanni is surrounded by a delightful cast of somewhat unexpected characters, beautifully brought to life by the likes of Camille Cottin (“CALL MY AGENT”), Vincent Lacoste, and a wonderfully wise Carole Bouquet. The plot is triggered by a sudden marital crisis (and quite a bit of genre-appropriate bed-hopping), and takes place over the course of one life-changing night in Paris. Yet, under its frothy surface, the film is actually a kind of deconstructed love story, in which the dreams of youth are held in sharp contrast to the world-weariness of middle age. But maybe the key to happiness lies somewhere in between… As Barry Manilow ponders, “Could this be the magic, at last?”

Starring Emmanuelle Devos, Gabriel Byrne, Gilles Privat, Aurélia Petit, Laurent Capelluto, Denis Ménochet.
In French with English subtitles.

Trailer

In the short break between performances in Calais, stage actress Alix, played by the stunning Emmanuelle Devos (Desplechin’s CHRISTMAS TALE), makes a quick escape to Paris. On the train, she meets a mysterious English stranger. Drawn toward him, she follows him, loves him, for a few hours, before facing what could be a new life. With masterful performances by Devos and her acclaimed co-star Gabriel Byrne, JUST A SIGH is an imaginative and lushly filmed Parisian romance. Young and versatile director Jérôme Bonnell  tells a real-time story with a particular sense for detail. Reminiscent of François Truffaut’s THE WOMAN NEXT DOOR the film captures vivid insights of a burning love evolving between two characters, wonderfully brought together by Bonnell’s down-to-earth approach. Just a Sigh captures an irrational, sentimental encounter balanced between the extremes of elopement and routine, with breathtaking psychological intrigue.
