COLCOA Short Films Awards 2016

 

The COLCOA Short Film Competition  took place on Sunday April 24.

In addition to the Short Film Award, Short Film Special Prize and Special Mention given by a jury of professionals, the audience had the opportunity to vote for the Short Film Audience Award, Short Film Audience Special Prize and Audience Special Mention.

Awards were announced Wednesday April 27.

 

2016 SHORT FILM JURY:

 

Roger Avary

Roger Avary  is a Canadian film and television producer, screenwriter and director. He co-wrote the script of RESERVOIR DOGS and PULP FICTION for which he and Quentin Tarantino were awarded theOscar for Best Original Screenplay. Credits include the screeplay of SILENT HILL and BEOWULF.  Roger also directed KILLING ZOE and THE RULES OF ATTRACTION. 

 

Sandrine Faucher Cassidy

Sandrine Faucher Cassidy is the School of Cinematic Arts director of Festivals and Distribution. As such, she counsels current students and alumni on how best to work their shorts in the festival circuit. She also helps students to create a distribution plan specially adapted to their film, and advises them on copyright and clearance issues. With over 23 years of experience in the film industry and international festivals dating back to her position at Unifrance Film International, She is is uniquely specialized in the distribution and exhibition of short films.

 

Mike Garris

Award-winning filmmaker Mick Garris has been a member of the Directors Guild of America since 1986. Garris has directed and produced in many media: cable (PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINNING, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, MASTERS OF HORROR, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, its spinoff, RAVENSWOOD, WITCHES OF EAST END and SHADOWHUNTERS), features (CRITTERS 2, SLEEPWALKERS, RIDING THE BULLET), television films (QUICKSILVER HIGHWAY, VIRTUAL OBSESSION, DESPERATION), series pilots (THE OTHERS, LOST IN OZ), network miniseries (THE STAND, THE SHINING, STEVE MARTINI’S THE JUDGE, BAG OF BONES), and series (SHE-WOLF OF LONDON, MASTERS OF HORROR, FEAR ITSELF).
Steven Spielberg hired Garris as story editor on the AMAZING STORIES series for NBC, where he wrote or co-wrote 10 of the 44 episodes.  Since then, he has written or co-authored several feature films (RIDING THE BULLET, *BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED, THE FLY II, HOCUS POCUS, CRITTERS 2, RIDING THE BULLET) and teleplays (AMAZING STORIES, QUICKSILVER HIGHWAY, VIRTUAL OBSESSION, THE OTHERS, DESPERATION, NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES, MASTERS OF HORROR, FEAR ITSELF).  
He is Creator and Executive Producer of Showtime’s MASTERS OF HORROR series, as well as creator of the NBC series, FEAR ITSELF, both anthology series of one-hour horror films written and directed by the most famous names in the fear-film genre: John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, George Romero, John Landis, Dario Argento, and several others.  Garris also is a writer and director on both series.  Garris was also Executive Producer and Director of Stephen King’s BAG OF BONES miniseries for A&E.  He is currently developing three series.
Garris was also Executive Producer of the Universal feature, UNBROKEN, based on the life of Louis Zamperini and the book by Laura Hillenbrand. It was directed by Angelina Jolie, and has proven to be an international box office hit.
Mick is also known for his FEARnet television interview series POST-MORTEM, where he sits down with some of the most revered filmmakers in the horror and fantasy genre for one-on-one discussions.

 

Lisa Sandi: 

Lisa handles nationals television distribution on all programming coming out of San Francisco’s PBS-affiliate, KQED. She also produces two of the station’s signature series: Film School Shorts is a national broadcast and online program that showcases the work of student filmmakers from universities around the country; and Truly CA offers a curated collection of short and feature documentaries that capture the unique character of the Golden State. Since joining KQED in 2006, she has worked on national distribution of shows such as The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! In Defense of Food, and the cooking shows of Jacques Pépin.
