Mathieu Malinski, a small-time hood from the banlieue, walks past a piano in the Gare du Nord train station in Paris and can’t resist tickling the ivories. It turns out that, unbeknownst to his homies, he’s a musical prodigy. At that very moment, the director of the National Conservatory of Music, rushing to catch a train, pricks up his ears… and the rest is history. A coming-of-age tale about nurturing talent, believing in oneself, redemption and the transcendent power of music. Ace actors Lambert Wilson and Kristin Scott Thomas bring depth and nuance to their characters, the aforementioned music director and his most demanding piano teacher. The film’s virtuoso wunderkind is played by 21-year-old Jules Benchetrit, the real-life son of writer-director Samuel Benchetrit (Dog, COLCOA 2018) and the late Marie Trintignant, and the grandson of legendary French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant (My Night at Maud’s, The Conformist, Z, Amour).
Writer-director Ludovic Bernard cut his teeth as assistant director on some 37 features, including the Luc Besson/EuropaCorp films The Lady, Taken 2, The Family, Lucy, Taken 3, and 3 Days to Kill, as well as Jean-François Richet’s Mesrine I and 2 (COLCOA 2009). In 2017, he wrote and directed his first feature, the romantic comedy The Climb, which nabbed both the Audience Award and Grand Prize for Best Film at the Alpe d’Huez International Comedy Film Festival. That was followed by another romcom, Mission Pays Basque, the following year. He is currently in post-production on his fourth feature, a family comedy entitled 10 jours sans maman.
