WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION ON SCREEN IN FRENCH CINEMA
A conversation with:
Mounia Meddour – Writer, director of Papicha
Hélène Giraud – Writer, director of Minuscules: Mandibles From Far Away
Cathy Verney – Writer, director of Vernon Subutex
Forty percent (40%) of COLCOA’s line up is directed by women this year. Gender parity through on screen representation matters as much as behind the scenes. In the US, the Bechdel test has been used to provide a simple set of guidelines. For a movie to pass: (1) It has to have at least two female characters (2) who talk to each other (3) about something besides a man.
How are women represented on screen in France today? How does French Cinema go beyond the archetypes of the “wife of”, the “good friend of”, “the nymphomaniac”, the “evil godmother”? And what are the contemporary films told from a woman’s point of view? For women to continue to take the reins it is significant that they continuously do so on screen.
