Ever since she was little, Lois has had but one dream in life — to become an astronaut and fly far away from this world, where she feels so out of place. Now 16, she may be a science whiz and a star student, but one thing stands in her way. Lois weighs over 200 lbs… and astronauts, she’s told, must be svelte and athletic. Marie-Sophie Chambon’s debut feature is a delicate, heartfelt dramedy about shame, acceptance, friendship, self-love and what it feels like to be an outsider. It’s also a political statement on societal assumptions about acceptable female body images. Peopled with an entire ensemble of outcasts brought to life by an especially endearing cast — including young charmer Laure Duchêne, who makes her screen début as Lois, and the ever-ebullient Philippe Rebbot, as her father — Stars By the Pound is a veritable celebration of gorgeous otherness.

As a screenwriting major at La fémis film school in Paris, writer-director Marie-Sophie Chambon co-wrote screenplays for several student films, before graduating in 2011. In 2014, she wrote and directed her first short, Princesse, which won the Best Short Film Award at the Saint-Jean-de-Luz Film Festival. In 2015, she co-wrote the script for Leyla Bouzid’s feature film As I Open My Eyes (COLCOA 2016), then went on to co-write and direct two more shorts, L’obsolescence programmée des machines and Des confettis sur le béton, which she co-directed with Oriane Bonduel. Stars By the Pound, her first feature, won the Audience Award at this year’s Mon Premier Festival, a children’s film festival in Paris.
